We are absolutely delighted to share the exciting news that legendary Blues goalkeeper, David Latchford, has accepted the role of Honorary Club President of the Shropshire branch of the Birmingham City Official Supporters Club.
Now residing in Shropshire, Dave truly embodies the spirit of the Blues and is a symbol of a golden era for Birmingham City. With a remarkable career spanning nine years as a commanding goalkeeper, Dave played alongside other legendary figures such as brother Bob Latchford, Bob Hatton, Kenny Burns, and, of course, Trevor Francis.
Born on April 9th, 1949, in Kings Heath, Birmingham, Dave is the older brother of former England international striker Bob Latchford and Celtic goalkeeper Peter Latchford. His journey with Birmingham City began in 1964 when he joined from school, signing professional forms at 17. Dave’s talent quickly shone through, earning him a place in the England Youth squad and an appearance in the 1967 FA Youth Cup final.
Dave made his League debut in April 1969, leading the Blues to a 2-1 victory at Bury. He was named the club’s Player of the Year in 1973, a testament to his outstanding contributions. After making 206 appearances for his beloved boyhood club, Dave moved on to play for Motherwell in 1978, followed by stints at Bury, Barnsley, and in non-League football. Post-retirement, Dave transitioned to a successful career as a funeral director and later as the superintendent of cemeteries in Solihull, while also dedicating time to coaching at Solihull Borough. Dave now enjoys life in Shropshire with his wife, Lorraine.
In his own words, Dave shared:
“I am truly honoured to be considered for the role of Honorary Club President of the Shropshire Blues Official Supporters Club, and am very pleased to accept. I look forward to attending special meetings, presentations, and meeting fellow fans. It’s always a pleasure to connect with fellow Bluenoses!”
We are deeply honoured that Dave has accepted this role and look forward to announcing a special event for our members very soon. Find out more at our next club meeting.
Stay tuned!
